Is that a bunch of bananas on your head or are you just happy to see me?

The team set out late Sunday afternoon to our first destination, the northern Rwandan town of Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri).
The town straddles the eastern Rift mountain range, nestled below a string of active volcanoes, a stones throw from Uganda.

On the slopes of the Virunga national park is the home of the famous mountain gorillas of Gorillas in the Mist / Dian Fossey fame.

Breakfast with the rock star eye care team (from the left) …
Dr. Steve Christiansen, world renown Boston University ophthalmologist, specializing in pediatric surgery.
Heather, wife of that devilishly handsome rogue Riad
Sam, in-country PEACE team ambassador
Penny, nurse and part of Dr. Steve’s team
Moise, driver, translator and generally awesome dude.
Jen, nurse and part of Dr. Steve’s team
A few team members were missing, specifically George our valiant leader, Scott Rowe-technician, and Prince, second driver and translator… all of whom remained in Kigali awaiting the arrival of our gear.
As we awaited the rest of the team and gear, we took the opportunity to explore the area.

Lance Armstrong has nothing on these guys… every jerry can is full of water.

In the villages, children are taught that foreigners or Mukanze eat children… they were very very nervous.

Nothing says rural more than a cow parked outside.

The look says it all… “No sir, you ain’t eating me”

The village women carry everything on their heads, bag of potatoes, basket of fruit, water can, name it and it can be balanced… Heather in hands free mode.

I go BANANAs for bananas… had to pick up a bunch of fresh bananas, and so easy to carry.
