Within inches

Our flight into Cairo was midweek, arrived after midnight and filled with Egyptians. Despite our best efforts, a blond dude with a sweet mustache and an Asian, humping backpacks through the airport, stood out.
We were immediately harrassed for a cheap cab, cheap hotel, cheap tour, cheap money exchange... welcome to the land where Westerners are perceived as walking dollar signs...I guess in relative terms we kinda are.

Again, thanks to some deft planning by my better half, we had squared our hotel.
The cab ride into the city was better than any Six Flags ride. Apparently concepts like stop signs, traffic lights, or even lanes are merely suggestions, not reall to be taken seriously. I would have photos had I not been too busy praying for our lives.

Our original plan has always been to meet our friends Helen and Ryan and travel together through Egypt. Unfortunately, Helen works for some guy named Ebenezer, so they would not be joining us until Saturday night. Having 4 days to kill, we decided to spend the first day, exploring the city, specifically Islamic Cairo, home to Khan Al-Khalil, a giant outside market, open since the 14th century.

Walking the streets of Cairo... impossible to compare unless you have been to Delhi in India. Australia has 22 million people, Canada has 25... they are pretty freakin big places... Cairo is home to 20 million people... can you say claustrophobic?

This kid almost convinced us that we NEEDED this gown...

Beautiful minaret peaking out above the market, where the call to prayer is sounded...

An entire section (street) of the market, dedicated to... plastic flowers?

Egyptian Home Depot...

Sampling the street food...

An important Ambassabor to for our culture and nation, Hanna Montana continues to build bridges...

And we thought that driving IN a car was dangerous, HA. Pedestrians are freakin invisble...
Mom, you are always freaked out about me travelling... for once, be afraid, be very afraid.
We were almost clipped at least a dozen times... crossing the road is rolling the dice here. We actually caught a cab to get across one particularly crazy roundabout.
This one was snapped as Heather yanked me out of the way...
