Just outside Kuching, is the Semenggoh Orang-utan rehabilitation centre... and no this is not for apes who had misguided youth; it is to reintroduce illegally captured and exploited apes back into the wild.
Our expectations were low, as it is currently fruiting season, and apparently the fruits in the jungle are more delicious than the fruit offered by the park rangers.
WOW, talk about under promise and over deliver...
When feeding started, the few tourists gathered at a safe distance to observe and snap away, safely from about 50 ft.
After about an hour, the kids got bored, and parents followed, leaving a handful of us, just chillin.
Then all of a sudden, an adolescent male (not the alpha), comes crashing in over head.
The female and her baby, get spooked, and drop down right in front of us.
I guess adolescent males are generally tools, in both the monkey world and ours.
She and the baby proceeded to basically "walk amongst us" for a good 15 mins.
For a little proximity, Heather is no more than 10 ft from them.
We must have driven them bananas (hee hee), cuz they finally swung back into the jungle.
This was a truly awe-inspiring experience.
oh and Syed. no Orang-utans were spooked in the taking of these photos.
Ended the visit, with this lovely fellow... he was caught in a fisherman's net, and they did not want to hurt him, so they handed him over to the centre.
Problem is, they can't really release him back into any river, else he EAT someone.
So here he waits, while they try to work something out.
If anyone knows of a river interested in accepted a happy go lucky crocodile, who is only looking to snack on the occasional small child, please contact the Semenggoh centre at 1-800-CROC-NUT
