I have always been curious as to how much spelunking is enough spelunking before one is over spelunking... happy to report Heather and I's spelunking limit is about 5 caves.
We left with yet another group of good friends, with Rieke and Rasmussen, ze fearless Germans staying on for more (their spelunking limit is much much higher).
Good bye fair Mulu, we will miss your giant creepy things living in your giant dark caves...
From Mulu, the revised plan was to take a direct flight to Sabah, the Northern Borneo province, specifically the city of Kota Kinabalu.
Unfortunately, all direct flights from Mulu to KK were booked for a solid week, so we improvised and flew to the nearby city of Miri, hoping to catch a flight from there to KK.
Again, no luck, all flights booked... again improvise...
We found a bus that left Miri bright and early in the morning for a 12 hour ride to KK... ugh oh well, it is the journey not the destination right???
With a night to burn, we made the best of it and caught up on blogging.
And hit famed local hot spot, Khan's Islamic Indian Curry house (hands down, best Indian food ever) ...
And learned more about Katniss Everdeen and her Hunger issues...
Arriving the next morning at the bus stop, we met a local who said he was heading home to KK, and would be willing to drive us in his mini van with a few others, for the same price, in half the time.
So to review, strange dude at a bus stop, offering us a ride across the country, in a van, I mean, what could possibly go wrong (cue every serial killer movie ever made)...
As a testament to the kindness of the Malay people, Ahmed was absolutely brilliant... we stopped for lunch, ate Rambutan, sang Malay tunes, napped in the back... basically a super fun road trip across Northern Borneo, and as promised, rolled into KK 6 hours later, dropping us off a block from our new hostel.
Ahmed stopped along the way to pick up a few kilos of Rambutan...
